
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

LEVELS

Level I: INTRODUCTORY/BEGINNING: (0 -1 years of consistent dance training in the style)
Introduces the students to the history of the particular style of dance, basic vocabulary and technique, proper alignment, relevant stretches and conditioning, dance class protocol, simple choreography, rhythm, spatial awareness, levels, and pathways

Level II: ADVANCED BEGINNING: (2-4 years of consistent dance training in the style)
Builds upon the technique learned in level one, introduces more vocabulary and technique, increased speed and complexity of choreography, more historical knowledge of the style, more challenging stretches and conditioning

Level III: INTERMEDIATE: (5-7 years of consistent dance training in the style)
Builds upon the technique learned in level two, increased teaching speed, introduces more advanced technique, increased speed and complexity of choreography

Level IV: ADVANCED: (8+ years of consistent dance training in the style)
Builds upon the technique learned in level three, increased teaching speed, continues with advanced technique, increased speed and complexity of choreography, increased focus on expressivity, improvisation, and dance composition. Preparation for collegiate and professional work.

Open: ALL LEVELS: (1+ years of consistent dance training; may not be a good fit for absolute beginners)
Implements a class structure that allows the technique, stretches, and choreography to be modified for simplicity or challenge based on the development and needs of each individual dancer. This class level also often refers to classes that don’t have a traditional progression of difficulty levels.

Creative Dance
This class is for beginning dancers ages 3 and 4. This class is designed to teach young dancers to communicate through movement. It will introduce students to elements of movement including time, shapes, and space. While allowing dancers plenty of freedom to explore their own creativity, this class will introduce young dancers to the basics of dance in a fun, exciting, age-appropriate manner.
Creative Acro
This class is for beginning dancers ages 3 and 4. This class is designed to teach young dancers to communicate through movement. It will introduce students to basic acrobatic concepts that include balance, flexibility, and tumbling, while allowing dancers plenty of freedom to explore their own creativity. This class will help improve spatial awareness, body awareness, confidence, balance, flexibility, and expressivity.
Fun Fusion
This class is designed for dancers ages 4-6. This class will introduce dancers to basic ballet and either tap, or acrobatic, movement and vocabulary. Dancers will explore the two differing styles of dance and build a foundation for future study in either style. This class allows the young dancer to evaluate their preferences through exploration of both styles using fun, age-appropriate music and movement.
Ballet
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. Ballet is a codified style of dance and embodies light, airy movements and upright, lengthened limbs and torso. This class will encourage strength, flexibility, posture, grace, coordination, musicality, and discipline.
Jazz
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. Jazz dance was traditionally performed to upbeat music, but now it can be done to all styles of music and embodies turns, leaps, isolations, personality, energy and style. This class will develop and enhance technique, strength, flexibility, coordination, stamina, rhythm, style and performance skills.
Contemporary/ Lyrical
This class is available for dancers ages 9 to adult. Lyrical and contemporary dance utilizes technique from ballet, jazz, modern, and other dance styles to convey a message through unique movement. This class will teach students to effectively communicate the meaning of movement, while enhancing musicality, technique, strength, and performance quality. It is recommended that dancers take a traditional technique class (ballet, jazz, modern) as a prerequisite or in conjunction to lyrical/contemporary.
Modern
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. Modern dance is a style of dance that allows for a wide range of expression. Modern dance movement is grounded and limitless, and often includes floor work, angular shapes, the use of breath, gestures, and pedestrian movements such as running and walking. Based on the style, there are other characteristics that make each modern dance class unique. This class will build technique, strength, coordination, joint articulation, musicality, spatial awareness, kinesthetic awareness, and performance skills.
Tap
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. Tap dance focuses on rhythm, time, weight shifting, musicality, and style. This class will include tap dance technique and vocabulary, exploration of various tempos and rhythm, musicality, and performance.
Hip Hop
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. Hip Hop dance is based on movement and culture that originated in the African-American community. Hip Hop dance includes traditional Hip Hop, Krump, Break Dancing, Tutting, Dub-Step, Animation, and the list goes on. This fun class will teach rhythm, musicality, coordination, personality, and style to age-appropriate, positive music.
Acrobatics
This class is available for dancers ages 3 to adult. Acrobatics focuses on balance, flexibility, strength, and tumbling skills. This class will promote flexibility and strength while progressively introducing rolls, cartwheels, flips, back-bends, and other body postures that require the dancer to balance on their arms and hands instead of feet.
Ballet Bootcamp
This class is designed for dancers with at least 1 year of recent Ballet experience. This class will challenge the dancer to push their technical and physical boundaries while developing strength, flexibility, posture, coordination, and discipline. Ballet BootCamp will combine Ballet technique with an aerobic workout to strengthen and condition dancers of any skill level. This class does not perform in the spring concert.
Leaps & Turns
This class is available for dancers ages 9 to adult. This class is an extension of traditional technique classes and focuses solely on conditioning and strengthening the dancer’s body for leaps and turns. This is an ideal class for anyone looking to improve their leaps and turns and for dance team members desiring a competitive edge. This class does not perform in the spring concert.
Partnering
This class is available for dancers ages 9 to adult. This class is an extension of traditional technique classes and focuses on partner work in dance. This class will teach dancers to effectively work together by exploring weight sharing techniques and lifts.
This class is currently only offered during special sessions. This class does not perform in the spring concert.
Stretch & Conditioning
Stretch & Conditioning will help improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion. This class will incorporate techniques from various disciplines to help strengthen the dancer's total body, thereby allowing for a wider range of expression and aiding in injury prevention. This class is open to dancers Level I and above, and all skill levels. This class does not perform in the spring concert.
Cheer Dance
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. This class explores the
fundamentals of cheer movement and cheer style dance choreography.
This class is currently only offered during special sessions.
West African Dance
This class is available for dancers ages 6 to adult. This class explores rhythm
and grounded movement and rhythm native of West African culture.
Characteristics of this style of movement are isolations, angulations,
bent legs, and polyrhythm.
Company Class
This is an exclusive class for performance company members only.
Invitation into the performance company is by audition only.
Adult Only Classes
These classes are available for dancers over 18 years of age. In order to promote a
more comfortable atmosphere for adult dancers, we limit these classes to adults only.
There are several styles of dance offered as Adult Only.
Liturgical/Worship Technique
This class is available for dancers ages 10 to adult. This class will provide
liturgical/worship/praise/sacred dancers with the technical tools and movement
vocabulary to effectively communicate the message of Christ to others.
This class will include a fusion of ballet, modern, jazz, and improvisational techniques
to promote strength, flexibility, alignment, stamina, coordination, musicality,
quality of expression, and authentic worship.
Liturgical/Worship Choreography
This class is available for dancers ages 10 to adult. This class will provide liturgical/worship/praise/sacred dancers the compositional knowledge to effectively create dances that convey the intended message. This class will include improvisational work, finding inspiration for movement, converting the inspiration to movement, and structuring your dance. At the end of the session, dancers will have successfully created their own worship dance.
Stretch & De-Stress
Stretch & De-Stress is an ideal class for worship dancers, or any dancers, who want to improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion. This class will incorporate techniques from various disciplines to help strengthen the dancer's total body, thereby allowing for a wider range of expression and aiding in injury prevention. Stretch & De-Stress will provide a relaxing atmosphere to enhance your body's movement potential while providing opportunities for reflection, prayer, and stillness. This class is part of the Liturgical/Worship Dance Curriculum.
